Avoid These Common Products In Your Beauty Routine

Looking your best can often seem like something of a challenge to achieve. One of the biggest elements of this is always going to be deciding on what products to use. Whether it is the skin cream, the shampoo and conditioner, or the moisturizer, you want to make sure that you are making as many of the right decisions as possible. As it happens, there are a number of common products and chemicals which people put onto their skin or in their hair which are actually incredibly dangerous and damaging. If you want to look your best without paying a price, be sure to avoid the following.

Hair Dyes

Wanting to change the color of your hair is pretty common, and a fair enough goal. But the problem with many mainstream hair dyes is that they can actually be extremely damaging to your hair follicles. Many studies over the course of quite a few years have shown that hair dyes are related to a number of serious conditions, including bladder cancer, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, and multiple myeloma. You can also develop a tolerance to the chemicals which can mean that you end up with a pretty horrendous rash. Instead of using hair dye, you can lighten your color effectively with lemon juice, or use tea to cover any grey areas.

Sulfate Shampoos

The choice of shampoo is pretty important too, and it is worth looking into if you are keen to keep your body as clear of potentially dangerous chemicals as possible. A common dangerous chemical in shampoos is sulfate, which over time can cause significant damage to your hair in a number of ways. Unfortunately, many of the most popular products on the market have a good deal of sulfate in them, so avoiding this might be harder than you think. However, if you look through these best sulfate free shampoos you will definitely be off to a good start. You will likely notice the difference in how your hair feels, too. My favorite brand of cruelty free + sulfate free shampoo is Hask!

Perfumes

Bad news for perfume lovers. As it turns out, many of the most popular perfumes on the market contain harmful secret ingredients which can actually lead to a number of serious problems later on in life. Many of these chemicals are related to hormone deficiencies, allergic reactions and even rare cases of cancer. There are also cases of it triggering asthma (even in nearby people to the person wearing it), migraines and nausea. Best avoided if you can help it – go for lesser-known indie perfumes which you can find online – and make sure they are always cruelty-free too.

 

By avoiding the three above, you will be on the right path towards ensuring that you are keeping your body as healthy as possible. It can be surprising how many harmful chemicals are in these products, so it is best to avoid them where possible – and always research a new product before switching.

Face Your Fashion Fears with Confidence

Fashion isn’t really my forte…well let’s be honest, nothing is really my forte haha. But I feel like when it comes to fashion, many people are too scared to go out of their comfort zone. I know that I have certain outfits in my closet that I enjoy wearing and gravitate more towards them when getting ready for the day. I also have some super cute clothes that still have tags attached and I’m sure I’m not the only one either! Here are my tips on how to own your outfit and get out of your comfort zone.

Be experimental.

Mix colors, mix patterns, mix textures. Mix it all! I know that there are some fashion rules that some people stick by, like not wearing black and brown together buuuuuut I totally do that sometimes. I wore a super cute little black dress with some brown strappy heels and got so many compliments. So, break the rules. You want to wear cheetah and zebra print together? Go ahead. The world is your stage and you better work it, girl.

Have a friend pick something out for you.

When I’m shopping, I love to look around and spend my time going through the racks to make sure that I don’t miss anything but sometimes it can get super tedious. Bring a friend with you when you go shopping and have them pick out an outfit for you. They’ll probably pick out something that you wouldn’t normally wear, and who knows? You might love it. (P.S. My mom picked out my sister’s prom dress from the rack and she thought she was going to hate it…it ended up being the one she bought!)

Get inspiration.

Do you love looking at magazines or watching NYFW? Inspiration is all around us and use it to your best ability. NYFW outfits are normally over the top, but they’re admired by so many so grab inspiration from those and I’m sure you’ll rock it. You might even start a new fashion trend.

Now, those are my tips to get you out of your comfort zone! Are you curious about what I’m hesitant to wear? Let me let you in on a little secret.

I really dislike wearing dresses, which is a shame. They’re comfortable and can make you look well put together without much effort. Why do I hate them? I feel like they hug my body awkwardly and show every lump and bump that I hate. I also really dislike my legs for a couple different reasons – they’re super pale, bruise easily, and my knees look funny. But guess what? I went out of my comfort zone on a couple different occasions, and looking back, I actually love how I look in these two dresses.

       

I came to the conclusion that no one was looking at me in these dresses the way that I was looking at myself. We are always so critical and hard on ourselves when there really is no need to be. You are beautiful, no matter what anyone else thinks. You can rock whatever you want to wear, wherever you want to wear it. You don’t need other people’s approval to feel good in your own skin. But you can radiate that feeling of self-love to others by showing how confident you are in your skin and dominating the day in whatever outfit you choose.

Invite The Outside In With A Natural Skincare Routine

We’re all aware that putting chemicals on our skin isn’t good for us. As well as causing rashes and spots, those chemicals can seep into our bloodstream! Evidence suggests that chemicals in skin care products can cause hormone imbalances and illness. Even so, we continue to use them! Why? In all honesty, most of us aren’t aware of the alternatives. Shop bought skincare products are convenient and accessible. The good news is, the alternatives are just as easy to get hold of. They’ll save you a hell of a lot of money, as well! Incorporating natural products into your routine could be the best thing you ever do for your skin and body. Here are a few products you’ll need to get started!

Essential Oils

There are many benefits to essential oils. They can help with your immune system and balance hormones. They have the power to reverse the damage you’ve done with those chemicals! Why not use your favourite essential oil to make the following health remedies smell amazing, too? There’s no denying that natural remedies may not have the greatest smell. Essential oils are the answer. If you want ready made products, there are many moisturizers available which already contain your favorite essential oils. All you need to do is go out and find them!

Coconut Oil

We all know about coconut oil by now, right? It seems to be cropping up everywhere at the moment. You used only to be able to grab this gem from health food shops. Its increasing popularity means you can find it in most food stores. You probably didn’t think about putting the stuff on your face, though, right? Think again! Coconut oil can have many benefits for your skin. From strengthening tissue to removing dead skin, the results will amaze you. You could even start removing your makeup with the stuff! If you have oily skin, it might be best to avoid this one. Otherwise, there’s no reason not to give it a go. It may seem like an alien concept, but one go will show you that it’s a change worth making!

 

Apple Cider Vinegar

Does acne plague your skin? Anti-spot treatments contain some of the strongest chemicals out there. You only have to smell them to know that they’re packed with nasty stuff! The good news is that a natural skincare routine should work wonders on your skin anyway. A lot of the time, it’s the strong chemicals we put on our face that cause those spots in the first place. Then, there’s apple cider vinegar. Again, this has been increasing in popularity recently. It’s one of those ingredients that pops up in much vegan cooking because of its benefits for your guts! But, who thought there would be benefits for your face, too? Apple cider vinegar could be just what you need to clear those spots away. Though, it might be best to do this just before you wash. There’s no denying that the smell isn’t the best!

Zabana Essentials Haul + Mini Review

Hey loves! It’s been a little while since I did my last haul and I’ve been promising on instagram that this one would be up soon (I’m just terrible at procrastinating, y’know!!)

So finally, it’s here! Let me tell you a little about Zabana Essentials. Zabana has 100% natural and vegan cosmetics that are handcrafted in California (I love stuff that’s made in the USA!) They have a range of products, like deodorants, a face serum, dry shampoo and even an armpit detox bar (say whaaa?!) I’ve been trying these out over the past few weeks & I’m hooked, so keep on reading to see what I got and what I like about them!

I’m a sucker for anything mini sized and also natural deodorants! I was intrigued by the fragrances they have available and how some are baking soda free (which I need since baking soda irritates the crap outta me). These definitely aren’t your typical natural deo smells and I love that. I picked up Lime Berry Basil  and Sage Blood Orange. These are the perfect size to shove in your purse or backpack! I currently have the Lime Berry Basil one in my locker at work and I love freshening up with it, it smells so goooood. I do recommend these if you’re looking for a new natural deo or just want to stock up on some minis! (Plus! They’d be a great gift for someone who wants to delve into the natural deo/green beauty world *hint hint*)

I live off of dry shampoo and don’t know what I would do without it. I haven’t tried a powder dry shampoo so that’s really why I picked this up! Plus, the scent caught my eye. It’s really easy to use – just sprinkle some on, let it sit then style per usual. (They recommend using a ‘natural bristled brush’ but I just use my regular hairbrush and it works fine. I also like to rub it in with my fingers). It smells great and does a really good job at making my hair look like it was just washed. I dooooo recommend!

I wanted to try out their face sprays so I got both of the ones that they offer. Lavender Lemongrass is for combo + oily skin and helps to detoxify and balance the skin. Citron Blossom is for all skin types and brightens and rejuvenates the skin. I use one or the other depending on my face issues. Usually I like to use the Citron Blossom one before putting on my makeup to help get it ready for application. If you want, you can also use these as a cleanser (sort of) – just spray it on then use a cotton round to remove excess dirt and oil. I love that these are in glass bottles so I can reuse them when I finish them off! I really like these and do recommend them as well.

Then lastly, the Armpit Detox Bar! When using natural deo (or transitioning into natural deo), you may find that you don’t smell as fresh or that it’s not working…that’s why you need to detox yo’ pits! This is made with Coconut, Charcoal and Clay so it’ll really suck out all the junk stuck in your pit pores and leave you with squeaky clean pits 🙂 They say to wet the bar, lather it in your hands, rub the lather in your pits then let it sit for 2-3 minutes then rinse off. I have noticed a difference when using this – I smell fresher for longer and I just feel more comfortable wearing natural deodorant when I use it. It’s definitely a must have for natural deo users, so get one stat!

Overall, I was super pleased with my first purchase from Zabana. They have amazing cruelty free, vegan + natural products and I can’t wait to try out all of the other stuff they have to offer. Do you want to try out Zabana Essentials? Let me know!

Ways To Avoid Skin Nightmares

With Halloween fast approaching, we’re seeing more bats, ghouls, zombies and haggard witches. There are plenty of stock horror characters that we’d rather not look like, but the last is a disturbing one in particular. It’s important to grow old gracefully, but nobody wants wrinkled, pallid and dull skin if it can be prevented. Taking care of your skin is an important part of looking young, healthy and fresh. So how do you go about it?

Numerous factors affect the rate at which your face ages. If you use more expressions, you are likely to develop more lines as the years go by. Cosmetic procedures such as botox can help to prevent this. However, the main give away when it comes to age is the health and condition of your skin. Age spots, loose skin and dull skin can all be surefire giveaways of age. There are plenty of products out there that can help with this issues. Make sure to moisturise your face after washing it, both morning and night. This will make sure that it doesn’t become dry or flaky. Lightening creams can help reduce the appearance of age spots. However, a more effective approach could be laser removal of these areas of dark pigmentation. Make sure to wear a high factor sun cream on your face every day, regardless of whether it’s sunny or not. UV rays still penetrate clouds and will make your skin visibly age faster. By wearing a high factor sunscreen, you will prevent these spots from returning.

It’s Not Just About Your Face

The skin on the rest of your body is important too. Okay, it might not wrinkle to quite the same extent as the skin on people’s foreheads and around people’s mouths does. But a huge part of looking youthful and radiant is firm, tight skin on the body. How do you achieve this? Well, regular exercise will prevent the buildup of fat which will naturally cause skin to sag when you lose the weight. But lotions and creams can help too. Invest in a good body lotion to keep skin extra soft & firm. How you care for the skin on your body will change depending on your situation. If you are pregnant, your skin will stretch at a fast rate to accommodate for your baby’s growth. This can result in stretch marks. To prevent these, or reduce the appearance of stretch marks that are already established, many people opt for Cocoa Butter or Bio-Oil. These products moisturise and loosen the skin. They also reduce the angry redness so common to stretch marks. I’ve also heard that using a coffee scrub can help to reduce the appearance of stretch marks and cellulite, here’s a DIY recipe here for a coffee + mint option.

Always remove your makeup before going to sleep. If you don’t, you could wake up to a host of new spots and blemishes on your face. Your skin needs time to breathe. Makeup clogs the pores, which is okay for short periods of time. However, if you have makeup on your face for a solid 24 hours, chances are you’ll experience a pretty big breakout. I like to use this coconut micellar water from Pacifica to remove my face makeup, and I usually use coconut oil on a cotton round to take off my eye makeup. (I’ve heard that coconut oil also works as an all-over makeup remover!)
