Why You Should Care About Cruelty Free Cosmetics

by

It’s been over two years since I started my cruelty-free journey and this blog. I have learned a lot about what cruelty-free means and I have been able to teach my friends, family, and readers about animal testing and why it needs to end. I feel like everyone is aware of animal testing but it’s when we turn our awareness into caring and become advocates in the fight against animal testing. Here’s why you should care about purchasing cruelty-free cosmetics.

It’s inhumane.

What got me interesting in learning about animal testing is a project I was assigned my freshman year in college. For my computer graphic design class, we had to pick a social topic and a word to describe both sides of the “argument” then create two posters that showed both sides. I did some research and came along animal testing, I used this site as a source for my project and was astonished that they still tested on animals even though there are alternate testing methods that leave animals out of the picture. A lot of companies claim that they test humanely, hence why I chose the word humane for both of my posters. There’s absolutely nothing humane about forcing chemicals onto (or even into) animals. Animals do not deserve to sit in cages all day and be tortured. Period.

It’s unnecessary.

Like I stated above, there are alternative testing methods that don’t harm animals. Many argue that there is no other way, but there is! In history, numerous things have been tested on animals and have been deemed safe or unsafe, therefore we don’t need to keep testing said ingredients on animals if they have already come to a conclusion about them. (A lot of safe ingredients are STILL being used to test on animals, which is unnecessary since they’ve already passed previous tests, correct?) We have come so far with technology that we have invented new ways to test products or ingredients – which is also cheaper than testing on animals! P.s. Animals don’t wear cosmetics, so why do we inject stuff into their eyes? Doesn’t make any sense.

It’s more than just bunnies and mice – it’s other animals too.

Yup, you heard that right. Did you know that beagles are the most commonly used dog breed for animal testing? And do you want to know why they use beagles? It’s because they’re naturally trusting of humans and they’re docile – so basically, they use that to their advantage in the lab and abuse those poor babies that just want to be loved. Totally uncalled for. Not to mention, most of the tests done on animals go wrong, so then those poor animals just get euthanized with no chance at a normal life.

It’s not accurate.

If you haven’t noticed, you aren’t a mouse, or a guinea pig, or a fish…so why do laboratories test on these animals when we really aren’t like them? “92% of experimental drugs that are safe and effective in animals fail in human clinical trials because they are too dangerous or don’t work” (Source). We aren’t wired the same as the animals that they test on – just like some humans have more sensitive skin than others. We have completely different body make ups, hence why we shouldn’t be testing on animals since these products/chemicals/drugs/ingredients could react totally different in a human beings body. THERE ARE OTHER TESTING METHODS OUT THERE, yo, laboratories get with the program! Stop testing on animals.

Now, as an ending note I would like to clarify a few things in case the comments get heated (I don’t think they will but you never know). 1.) Animal testing has been done for years and years and years. We are now in 2017, we have a list of ingredients that are safe and we don’t need to continue to test on animals if we know what ingredients are safe,

1.) Animal testing has been done for years and years and years. We are now in 2017, we have a list of ingredients that are safe and we don’t need to continue to test on animals if we know what ingredients are safe, kapeesh?

2.) Animal testing has contributed to life-saving procedures as well as medicine. Now, this is where it gets a little weary and confusing. There are some things in life that we won’t be able to get that haven’t been tested on animals – like medicine. BUT, there is a HUGE difference between testing medicine and testing VANITY products on animals. Just because you know that there are some things that have been tested on animals that you need, doesn’t mean you should just give up on buying cruelty-free products. Your dollar is your vote and you buying from L’Oreal, MAC, etc isn’t going to fix the problem – you’re contributing to it. MAC claims that they are in the fight against animal testing and only test where required by law and that’s a load of crap. They still sell in China even though they KNOW that China requires them to test their cosmetics by law, so they are not in the fight to stop animal testing. (This is just MY opinion, it’s not a “cruelty-free” law y’know).

3.) Start somewhere. Whether it’s purchasing a cruelty-free foundation or mascara, that’s a start. You don’t have to replace every single makeup product you own today just because I’ve been talking about animal testing, but when you go to purchase new items – take a second, think about it, and support cruelty-free brands (there are plenty out there)!

BUY FROM CRUELTY-FREE BRANDS, PLEASE.

Not sure where to start? Check out my cruelty-free on a budget posts, my posts featuring cruelty-free products, and check out Logical Harmony for a HUGE list of cruelty-free brands!

I hope you enjoyed the post. Sorry if it seemed all over the place, I saw another blog post that kind of ticked me off so I decided to write about my side and why I am a cruelty-free beauty blogger.

Thanks so much for reading, as always <3

Foxbrim Haul + Review *

by

Hey my loves! Another haul comin’ at chu. Today is all about Foxbrim, a cruelty-free company who offers organic, natural skincare and hair care products, which are also affordable!

(P.s. Shout out to my friend Emily for some great pictures that I wouldn’t have been able to get on my own!)

This is by far one of my favorite products that I’ve ever tried. I have stretch marks on the back of my thighs that kind of just appeared out of nowhere and I’m really insecure about them (like not wanting to wear shorts, insecure about them). I’ve always been kind of skeptical about stretch mark creams or similar products but decided to give this one a go since it contains rosehip oil and I’ve heard that it’s good for scars and marks. I tried this at night and the next morning one of my stretch marks was faded and wasn’t as deep as it used to be (if I ran my fingers over it I could feel the indentation…) I was seriously so surprised. I apply it at least once every day, usually before bed but it is suggested to use it twice a day. I definitely recommend the Revitalizing Stretch Mark Oil, it’s what dreams are made of.

The Ocean Mineral Lotion has been my go to in the morning. It’s lightweight and doesn’t leave me feeling greasy, plus it smells good! I love that it has hyaluronic acid in it because it helps with aging and I’ve gotten so many compliments on my skin since using this.

Another thing I like to use in the morning! The Lavender Mist Toner is so refreshing on the skin and it has beneficial ingredients in it to fight redness and inflammation, and the lavender essential oil helps to reduce stress and calm you down.

*insert goofy pic here*

This has been my go-to cleanser lately now that my acne has calmed down a little. The Coconut Mil + Honey Facial Cleanser has vitamin E oil in it, aloe vera, honey and more to give you a gentle but effective cleanse. It’s so gentle on the skin and helps to balance out my oily-ness.

The Ultimate Renewal Scar Cream is perfect for acne scars, dark spots or other parts of your body! I’ve been using it on some of my acne scars and so far, so good. It’s been lightening the spots and helps to heal the skin. The bottle is smaller than the other products, but you don’t really need a lot of it for it to do it’s job!

I also have a discount code for my readers. Get 15% off ANY and ALL Foxbrim products with the code “RAECHIC15”!

I hope you enjoyed the post. Are you interested in any of these from Foxbrim?! Let me know 🙂

Thanks so much for reading, as always <3

LoveGoodly June/July 2017 Unboxing

by

I’m really bad at not spending money…I constantly tell my boyfriend to take my debit card away from me but that won’t help me any since PayPal exists and I cannot be stopped.

ANYWAYS, previously I told you guys that I would be canceling my LoveGoodly subscription. Well I did, then I saw that the June/July box was going to have a FULL sized KVD everlasting liquid lipstick in it and I hopped onto LoveGoodly so quickly to resubscribe and I’m happy that I did! This is a treat for me every other month and I really do enjoy opening it and trying out the new products in it. I’m happy that this whole box wasn’t just beauty related items, so if you’re curious to see what I got, keep on reading! (I apologize for the crappy pictures, used my iPhone since my ring light was not cooperating!)

So this is the KVD Everlasting Liquid Lipstick in Lovecraft which is a beautiful mauve color. If you’ve been around for a while, you know I don’t like the Colourpop Ultra Matte lipsticks but I love this one. It doesn’t feel drying on the lips like the Colourpop ones do. The KVD one definitely has a creamier consistency while the Colourpop ones have a wet consistency. Anyways, SUPER excited to wear this in the fall. Mauve looks really good on me, not to toot my own horn or anything but gotta give yourself compliment when you can, y’know?

I was surprised to see these in my box, but I’m kind of glad that they were included. My nails are so brittle and break all the time so I hope these supplements will help me out. They are vegetarian which is a mega plus. I wonder if they’ll help you my skin problems to…I’ll keep you updated on Instagram, so make sure you’re following me there!

Ah! This is so cute. So this is a hair tie that also doubles as a bracelet (or a bracelet that doubles as a hair tie). They were giving this turquoise color away in boxes or a black one and I’m happy I got the turquoise one! The color is one of my favorites and I love the bracelet. Really cute, really simple but also handy! GemTye also has a lot of different styles so check those out.

This is a pretty pink polish from FABY. I’ve never heard of them before but they are 7 free (meaning no yucky chemicals) and they’re vegan if that’s something that is important to you. This one is called “Hula Hoop Pink” but I don’t think it’s available for purchase anymore but they do have loads of other colors that are pretty as well.

Here is a pin from Fred + Far which is a company that promotes self-love. They make jewelry to remind you to love yourself and honor yourself. I think this is an amazing idea! I already put the pin on my backpack and I can’t wait to show it off on campus.

Here is the card with all of the prices and details if you were curious! This month’s box supports Farm Sanctuary <3

I hope you enjoyed the post!

Thanks so much for reading, as always <3

Carli Bybel Deluxe Edition Review + Swatches

by

Alright, so I totally told myself that I wasn’t going to buy this since I thought it was pretty similar to her original palette (review here) but I caved and went for it. This palette is $19.50 and has 21 shades in it (15 shadows, 6 highlights). I think that the colors are pretty similar to the original one, but I think bhCosmetics stepped their game up with the quality on this one. I also like that there’s more products to choose from and it’s kind of an all-in-one palette, if you’re into a quick makeup look like I am.

I love that it has a mirror because it makes it easy for travel and it has a magnetic closure which is much stronger than what it was on the original one. I love the quote that she has inside and the marble pattern for the body of the palette!

Here are the shadows. You get a good mix of mattes, satins and shimmers. I like how there’s not just your normal shades and that there’s a few purple – mauvey shades thrown into the mix.

Here are the highlights! Finally, one light enough for my skin. I like that this palette has more selection, since skintones aren’t universal and you can mix them if you wish for certain effects!

Here are the swatches of the first row, left to right. I’m horrible at getting swatch pictures, but I tried my best. These are finger swatches, which work really well with these shadows. They’re super smooth and buttery but also have some fallout, but it’s not a big deal. I like the first shade on the left as a transition shade for me!

See what I mean by them being buttery? This was after a light finger swatch, but I won’t complain.

I love the second and third shade in the row! I think the second shade is actually in the first palette and it was the one I hit pan on, which should tell you something. I also like the 4th shadow, since it’s not a color that I have in my collection.

The last row of shadows. You can see that the first one is a super light matte color that barely shows up on me, but I’m sure this would be a good base color to set your eyeshadow primer and to help brighten up your brow bone! I think the last brown in this row is pretty good too, definitely an improvement from the first palette since that brown had chunks of glitter in it.

I should have flipped the swatch photo, but basically the swatches are on the opposite sides lol oops. I love the rose color highlight, it’s stunning and I bet it would be a beautiful on the eyes as well. The gold shade is too dark for me, but I bet it would be great for my tan babes.

Holy. Pigmentation. I like to mix the first two highlights in this row to give me a holographic highlight, which may be too much for some people – but when you’re as pale as me, you need it! Super super super gorgeous highlights.

Here is a comparison of the original highlights (round pans) vs. the new highlights. I think the pink one improved and I also love that they added a frosty/white highlight for gals like me.

Overall, I’m super impressed! For only $20, this palette is pretty badass and was created by one of my favorite YouTubers and makeup artists. You can pick the palette up from bhCosmetics here or grab it when it hits the shelves at Ulta!

I hope you enjoyed the post. Is this palette on your wishlist? Let me know why it is or isn’t 🙂

Thanks so much for reading, as always <3
